Valparaiso Community Schools offers a myriad of education opportunities for over 6,000 students who reside in the City of Valparaiso and surrounding Center Township. The school district takes pride in its schools and its staff.
The Valparaiso Community Schools consists of eight elementary schools for students in K-5. Students in elementary school are encouraged to grow academically, emotionally, physically, and socially. The schools develop curricula that are teacher driven, as well as criterion-referenced measures for the academic areas. Presently, the elementary curriculum includes social studies, science, mathematics, reading, language arts, physical education, music, art and computer technology.
Students in grades 6-8 attend Benjamin Franklin Middle School or Thomas Jefferson Middle School. Cooperative and explorative learning are a part of the district's middle school education. At the core of the curriculum is a range of subjects to include mathematics, science, language arts, and social studies. Students are provided exploratory options in the areas of family and consumer sciences, industrial technology, fine and performing arts, speech and computer education.
Valparaiso High School serves the district for grades 9-12. At the high school, the curriculum and guidance support work together preparing students for what is beyond the high school years, whether it is higher education or productive employment. The high school not only provides a solid foundation of mathematics, science, social studies and English, but also a breadth of elective courses. Elective courses enable students to personalize their high school experience. College preparatory courses and technical preparation curriculum offer a challenge to the average as well as the exceptional and special student. Students may take vocational courses or enroll in the Alternative High School program offered at the Porter County Career & Technical Center.
The Valparaiso Community Schools has made a commitment to excellence. Parents and community members are invited to reinforce this commitment by becoming involved in the schools working together with faculty and staff to provide the best educational opportunities for all Valparaiso students.
