February 20, 2022 Updated Control Measures

Dear VCS Families and Staff,

I hope that the extended long weekend finds you well!   As we look forward to returning to school on Tuesday, February 22, I wanted to update you on the recently revised control measures published and announced by the Indiana Department of Health (IDOH).

Based on these revisions, VCS will no longer quarantine students who have been exposed to a positive Covid-19 case, regardless of vaccination status or whether students wear masks.  In addition, VCS will not contact trace or report positive Covid-19 cases to the IDOH.

The IDOH further states that anyone who tests positive for Covid-19 should isolate for 5 days and return to school on day 6, as long as symptoms have improved and they have been without a fever for 24-hours or more.

For more information, please visit coronavirus.in.gov.

Please note the following:

  • VCS will continue to encourage frequent hand washing/sanitizing in addition to other layered mitigation protocols.
  • Masks will still be required on school buses due to the federal transportation mandate still in effect.
  • Keep your child home from school if:
    • They are not feeling well and exhibiting symptoms of COVID-19
    • Your child has been exposed to an individual with COVID-19 outside of school and they are exhibiting symptoms
    • You are waiting for COVID-19 test results for your child; or
    • Your child tests positive for COVID-19
  • Avoid attending large gatherings if you are ill and exhibiting symptoms of COVID-19.
  • Practice healthy habits, including frequent hand-washing and covering your coughs and sneezes with a tissue.

February 11, 2022

Dear Valparaiso Schools Community,

When the Valparaiso Community Schools instituted the mask requirement in September, we promised that this action was temporary and was an effort to maintain continuous high quality, in-person instruction for our students and staff.  Further, we pledged to continue to closely monitor the fluid conditions while communicating with state and local officials in order to fulfill our duty to always do what is in the best interest of our students, teachers, and staff.

Throughout the process, VCS has considered many factors, and our ongoing review indicates significant progress.  Our considerations include positive cases in our community, positive cases reported directly to our schools, continued opportunities for vaccination for our entire school community, the number of individuals in quarantine, student and staff attendance rates, and legally-required length of quarantine for positive cases and direct contacts.

All of these metrics have steadily improved since the fall and early winter.

As a result of the above developments, and in consultation with Porter County’s Chief Health Officer, Dr. Maria Stamp, Valparaiso Community Schools will return to a mask-optional environment in all of the schoolhouses effective Monday, February 14, 2022.

Despite this, masks will still be required on school buses as part of the ongoing federal mandate for public transportation.

Please know that VCS supports any student or staff member who decides to continue to wear a mask in school, and no one will be prevented from doing so.

I’d like to personally thank each of you for your continued support of our VCS community.  We have all experienced various challenges through the pandemic, but we have achieved so much due to our shared commitment to serve and support the youth of our community.  Our mission remains the same, so please be assured that we will continue to monitor this fluid situation and alter our strategies swiftly in order to maintain the high-quality, in-person learning environment for our students and staff.

Thank you for your continued support.

Partners in Education,

Jim McCall, PhD

Superintendent of Schools

What does this mean for our school community?

  • Masks will now be optional for all students, staff, and visitors at all times in the schoolhouse.
  • Classroom direct contacts as well as those close contacts from households, extracurricular activities and athletics may still be subject to quarantine.  See IDOH requirements regarding Isolation and Quarantine in a mask-optional environment here.
    • **Vaccinated (asymptomatic) students and staff and those with documented positive tests within 90 days of contact remain exempt from contact-traced quarantines in all settings.
  • VCS will continue to encourage physical distancing in all settings and frequent hand washing/sanitizing in addition to our other layered mitigation protocols.
  • Please note that Masks will still be required on school buses due to the federal transportation mandate still in effect.

To further support our efforts, please continue to adhere to the following:

  • Keep your child home from school and call the school nurse if:
    • They are not feeling well and exhibiting symptoms of COVID-19
    • Your child has been exposed to an individual with COVID-19 outside of school;
    • You are waiting for COVID-19 test results for your child; or
    • Your child tests positive for COVID-19—Be sure to report any positive COVID test for your child(ren) to the school nurse.
  • Avoid attending large gatherings if you are ill and exhibiting symptoms of COVID-19.
  • Practice good healthy habits, including frequent hand-washing and covering your coughs and sneezes with a tissue.

January 30, 2022

Good evening VCS families,

The Indiana Department of Health (IDOH) has recently updated the contact tracing portion of their control measures as they pertain to fully-masked environments such as Valparaiso Community Schools. Specifically, the notification process for direct contacts has been updated and streamlined for all Indiana schools with mask requirements.

As a result of this IDOH update, beginning January 31, 2022, Valparaiso parents and guardians will receive a general notice of possible exposure when a student in their child’s classroom has had a positive COVID test. This general notice will be sent to the parents/guardians of all students in that classroom via an email through the Skyward messaging system. Please see below for the letter provided by IDOHr.

Please note that extracurricular activities where remaining fully masked may not be possible are still subject to the traditional contact tracing, quarantine protocols and individualized messaging.

All other previous mitigation strategies and protocols remain in place as outlined in the January 4, 2022 email to parents and staff.

Dear Parent or Guardian,

You are being notified that your student was in class today with an individual who is positive for COVID-19. Because we require masks during the school day, your student does not need to quarantine.

However, we ask that you monitor your student for symptoms of illness for the next 10 days and do not send your student to school if they are ill or become symptomatic. If symptoms develop, keep your student home, and obtain a COVID test.

If the COVID test is positive – your student should remain at home for at least 5 full days (may return on Day 6) as long their symptoms have improved, and they are fever free for at least 24 hours without the use of fever reducing medications such as Tylenol or Motrin. Please keep your student home even after 5 full days if they are still experiencing symptoms.

If the COVID test is negative – your student should remain at home until their symptoms are improved and they are fever free for at least 24 hours without the use of fever reducing medications such as Tylenol or Motrin. If your student is still sick 24 hours or more after a negative COVID test, consider getting a COVID PCR available at sites throughout the state.

Visit https://www.coronavirus.in.gov/covid-19-testing-information/ to locate a testing site near you.

Please contact your school nurse with additional questions.

An earlier version of this letter referenced the need for a physician's release to participate in extracurriculars following a positive COVID test.  This information had been included in the IDOH PowerPoint slides, but NOT on the official IDOH Control Measures document; as a result, the requirement for a physician's release has been removed from the letter.

Furthermore, individuals who are not fully vaccinated and are direct contacts of a positive case outside of school must wear a mask for the full 10-day window, including while performing extracurriculars.  The original language did not make that distinction.

The letter has been amended to reflect these corrections and will be posted to the website.  We apologize for any confusion or consternation this may have caused.

Thank you,

VCS Communications

January 4, 2022

Good morning VCS families and staff,

I hope that you have had a restful and joyous holiday break; it was wonderful to welcome back our students for the second semester yesterday, and we look forward to another successful semester of learning and engagement for them.  Below you will find an outline for the updated control measures published by the Indiana Department of Health, which includes lengths for the legally required quarantine—the full document outlining these required actions as well as a bulleted PowerPoint published by the IDOH are attached as well.

Beginning this week, all VCS staff and students will adhere to the updated protocols as outlined below:

  •     Individuals who test positive for COVID-19 must quarantine for 5 days from the onset of symptoms or, if asymptomatic, for 5 days after the date of collection of their positive test. They may return to school on Day 6 only if symptoms are resolving and they have been fever-free for 24 hours without medication.  May resume extracurricular activities on Day 6 if able to wear a mask properly at all times.
  •     Students and staff who are close contacts of a positive case while at school in a fully-masked environment do not need to quarantine but should monitor for symptoms.  May continue extracurricular activities by wearing a mask properly at all times while not actively performing or playing activity.  If symptoms develop, then stay home and get a test.  If positive for COVID-19, follow the isolation guidance.  If negative, return to school when symptoms have resolved.
  •     Students and staff who are close contacts of a positive case outside of the school day (home, athletic practices, extracurriculars, etc.) while unmasked must quarantine for 5 days after the last date of contact unless they are fully vaccinated or have a positive test for COVID-19 on file with the school in the last 90 days.  Individuals who are not fully vaccinated may resume extracurricular activities on Day 6 by wearing a mask properly at all times including while actively performing or playing activity.  If fully vaccinated, may continue extracurricular activities by wearing a mask properly at all times while not actively performing or playing activity.
  •     Please note: the IDOH has updated their definition of “fully vaccinated” to mean having received ALL doses of the vaccine, including a booster, if eligible.

Mitigation Strategies

VCS staff will continue to implement enhanced health and safety protocols, including sanitizing frequent touch points in buildings, providing students with ample opportunities to wash and sanitize their hands, and requiring all students and staff to remain masked during the school day and on school buses as outlined in the September 3rd letter to the VCS community. To further support our efforts, please continue to adhere to the following:

  •     Keep your child home from school and call the school nurse if:

    They are not feeling well and exhibiting symptoms of COVID-19;

    Your child has been exposed to an individual with COVID-19 outside of school;

You are waiting for COVID-19 test results for your child; or

Your child tests positive for COVID-19—Be sure to report any positive COVID test for your child(ren) to the school nurse.

  •     Avoid attending large gatherings if you are ill and exhibiting symptoms of COVID-19.
  •     Practice good healthy habits, including frequent hand-washing and covering your coughs and sneezes with a tissue.

Dear VCS Families & Staff,

As cold weather approaches, we would like to bring to your attention a few items of importance. Please take this opportunity to review your school communications preferences in Skyward Family Access.  It is critical that this information is up-to-date and accurate in the event of a weather closure or delay.  Click here to learn how to update your communications preferences.

Weather Delay Information

In the event of inclement weather, VCS will employ 2-hour delays when appropriate. School start times for a 2-hour delay will be as follows:

VHS: 9:35 a.m.

Middle Schools: 9:50 a.m.

Elementary Schools: 10:45 a.m.

Morning bus times will be approximately 2 hours later than their normal run times. For example, if your bus pick-up is normally 6:55 a.m., the adjusted time would be approximately 8:55 a.m.  Dismissal times will remain the same.

Daylight Savings Time

Finally, please be reminded that daylight savings time ends this Sunday, November 7, 2021. Be sure to set your clocks back or “fall back” one hour.

Thank you for your continued partnership in educating your children.

Dear Valpo Schools Community,

We would like to remind you that Tuesday, November 2, 2021, is our first scheduled eLearning day of the school year for all VCS students. Students will not report to their respective school on the eLearning day. Assignments will be completed by students on a device from home. You may view the complete school year calendar here: 2021-22 School Year Calendar.

We acknowledge that in-person learning is the best and most preferred model for instruction; however, scheduled eLearning days have many benefits including the opportunity for students  to learn in a blended environment where they can enhance technical and organizational skills. In addition to the benefits for students, scheduled eLearning days allow time for teachers to engage in professional development without disrupting the educational process.

Please review the following key points for the upcoming scheduled eLearning day:

  • Scheduled eLearning assignments will be posted by 4:30p on the evening before the day of eLearning.
  • Time on task will vary depending on the grade, class, teacher, and subject area.
  • Attendance will be based on student participation and submission of work.
  • Teachers will provide a checklist in Canvas that is easily accessible to students and families that highlights the required activities to be completed during eLearning.
  • Teachers will be available through digital communication (e.g. email, Dojo, etc.) to answer questions during designated office hours.

Additional eLearning information can be found on the district website at www.valpo.k12.in.us/elearning/.

Dear Valparaiso Schools Community,

In an effort to maintain high quality in-person instruction in a safe and healthy environment for our students while minimizing the disruption caused by mandatory quarantine rules, Valparaiso Community Schools will require masks for all students, staff, and visitors during the school day regardless of vaccination status in all of the schoolhouses effective Tuesday, September 7, 2021.

This change is the result of rising cases of COVID in Porter County and the subsequent increase of positive cases among our students and staff which has resulted in over 300 quarantined healthy individuals (missing over 2000 days of collective instruction) due to schoolhouse contact tracing since August 11.  Recently, Porter County Health Officer Dr. Maria Stamp issued her updated direction that school districts require masks in all Porter County schoolhouses regardless of vaccination status.  Furthermore, as directed by Governor Holcomb’s September 1st Executive Order 21-24, the Indiana Department of Health has updated their statutory “control measures” for communicable diseases; contained therein is the new provision that when masks are worn by all people in the classroom setting, close contacts are exempt from quarantine so long as they are asymptomatic.

What does this mean for our school community?

  • Masks will be required regardless of vaccination status in all VCS schoolhouses and on buses.  By wearing masks, VCS expects to reduce quarantines significantly which will increase the likelihood of maintaining full time in-person learning as well as continued opportunities for co- and extra-curricular activities during the pandemic.
  • A benefit of the updated IDOH control measures in a masked classroom is that instructional and social activities may return to pre-COVID conditions--no longer is a 3-foot or 6-foot radius required between students.  Students will now be able to engage in more partner work, turn-and-talks, small group instruction, labs, and other engaging activities with their peers without risk of being quarantined.
  • Staff will provide students opportunities, as allowed by state health protocols, to remove masks at appropriate times when eating, engaged in physical activity, and when 6-feet of physical distance is possible or while outdoors.
  • Household quarantines as well as those close contacts from non-classroom settings, extracurricular activities and athletics may still be subject to quarantine.  **Vaccinated (asymptomatic) students and staff remain exempt from contact-traced quarantines in non-classroom settings.
  • VCS will continue to encourage physical distancing in non-classroom settings and frequent hand washing/sanitizing in addition to our other layered mitigation protocols.

These measures will remain in place while the community and school data continue to be monitored with the consultation and direction of the Porter County Health Department.  Dr. Stamp has indicated that as the community data improves, her direction will change accordingly.

Thank you for your continued support.  Have a safe and restful holiday weekend.

Greetings Valpo Schools Families,

The 2021-22 school year is off to a fantastic start!  Our students have been excited to return to the schoolhouse to see their friends, start their activities, and meet their teachers.  After the typical beginning of the year wrinkles presented themselves, procedures have been ironed out for smoother operations throughout the day.  Overall, our students and staff are generating excellent momentum for a productive year of in-person learning.

To that end, Valparaiso Community Schools encourages our families to review the current Return to Learn plan for the mitigation protocols related to the COVID-19 virus, including the fact that fully vaccinated individuals who remain asymptomatic are immune from contact tracing and quarantine.  Earlier this week, Dr. Maria Stamp of the Porter County Health Department sent a letter to all of the county school superintendents reiterating the CDC recommendation that masks be worn by all while inside the school buildings and especially by those who remain unvaccinated.  VCS supports that position and encourages each family to review those recommendations to make decisions that are best for your children.  Valpo Schools will continue to provide opportunities for physical distancing, encourage frequent hand washing, maintain increased ventilation, and supply sanitizing stations.  Additionally, masks are required on the school buses and other school vehicles in accordance with the federal mandate for public transportation.

Please be assured that the community and district data will continue to be monitored; should the situation dictate a shift in policy in order to maintain in-person learning in a safe and healthy environment, then the district will swiftly make a change.

Thank you again for your part in making the first days of school so successful, and we look forward to another great year.

Sincerely,

Greetings and Welcome to Summer, Valpo Families!

As we flip the calendar to June, we are presented with an opportunity to reflect on this unique year to acknowledge the difficulties and celebrate the successes of our school community.  Unquestionably, 2020-21 has been one of our finest moments because of the diligence and collaboration of parents, students, teachers, staff, and our larger community.  Thinking back to all of the uncertainty present on August 12th when we opened our doors to students, it is truly gratifying to realize we’ve been able to succeed this year as a direct result of keeping our collective focus on the students and maintaining opportunities for them.  Along the way, we’ve made several reassessments, adjustments, and improvements to various parts of our operating plans, but through it all we’ve kept moving forward in response to the changing conditions of our community.  Thank you for all of your support and efforts as we navigated these last 15 months.

This past weekend’s VHS graduation ceremony and subsequent car parade were merely the crowning achievement in a year full of positive memories.  All of our students K-12 worked hard throughout the year to engage in learning activities, lessons and labs in multiple environments while growing as academians and people.  Our Academic Teams gathered victories at local and state venues as our students worked hard to prepare through after-school and Zoom practices.  Likewise, we’ve seen our athletic teams win conference championships, sectionals and regionals, and even State championships this year!  Music concerts and art shows were highlights in the Spring in all of our schools in addition to the VHS Drama Club being able to put on their riveting show!  Even Field Days at the elementary schools had the familiar energy and excitement of previous years.  Through it all, our students stayed connected to each other as well as to something larger than themselves, and they were better for it as a result.

We are proud to move forward together this summer as we begin preparing to welcome our students and families back to the schoolhouses next year.  Please enjoy the summer and each other, and we’ll see you soon.

Dear Valparaiso Schools Community,

It is difficult to believe that this unique school year is reaching its end. We are proud of our students, staff, and families for their commitment to health and safety efforts that allowed us to successfully offer in-person learning this year.

Last night, the Valparaiso Community Schools Board of Trustees was presented with proposed plans for the 2021-2022 school year. Highlights of the proposal include:

  • In-person learning is the most effective and most preferred modality of learning; however, we understand the need and desire for remote learning will still be present in the fall for some students and families.

  • In order to provide high quality teaching and learning to both in-person and remote learners while attending school five days a week, we will be utilizing one of our established partners, Edmentum EdOptions Academy, for grades 6-12 to provide online teachers, feedback, and grading that is aligned with VCS curriculum and Indiana standards.

  • At this time, VCS is exploring the use of Edmentum EdOptions Academy at the K-5 level as well with the same structure and supports.

  • Students who need to participate in remote learning will have access to school services including social-emotional learning resources, extracurricular activities, and academic support provided by VCS academic success coaches who serve as liaisons for school, home, and Edmentum.

  • Additionally, daily school schedules K-12 will shift closer to the traditional length and start times of the school day for the 2021-22 school year. Any variance would be contributed to the busing viral mitigation protocols still needed for the year.

In-person Learners who become quarantined will be accommodated in the same manner as other extended absences due to illness and may include opportunities for blended synchronous learning. Please refer to the information at the following link for further details: VCS Planning Document Fall 2021

The communal effort and support from our school community and the greater Valparaiso community has been instrumental in all that we have surmounted this year. We look forward to continuing to work together to do what is best for kids.

Dear Valparaiso Community School Families and Staff,

The Indiana State Department of Health released guidance in December 2020 to allow for quarantines shorter than 14 days in some circumstances.

After consultation with the Porter County Health Department, VCS will offer a 10-day quarantine option to students and staff provided that all of the following requirements are met when a person has been identified as a direct contact through contact tracing by the Valparaiso Community Schools:

  • If they have remained symptom-free during their quarantine period.

  • A negative COVID-19 test is administered on or after day 10.

  • Daily symptom self-monitoring, diligent mask use, and stringent physical distancing must continue through day 14.

  • Prior to your return, you must make contact with your school nurse in order to return to school on day 11 to confirm requirements are met.

Please note, the 10-day option does not apply to household direct contacts; additionally, the shortened quarantine period applies only to school activities where physical distancing and masks can be ensured, so athletics is not eligible.  VCS will provide COVID-19 rapid testing if requested. Information about rapid testing will be shared by VCS nursing staff during contact tracing.  Quarantined individuals may opt for the 14-day quarantine if that is their preference.

School officials will continue to monitor county and state metrics.  VCS reserves the right to suspend or eliminate the 10-day quarantine option based on further guidance from our local health officials.  We will continue to keep you informed as we navigate the COVID-19 environment together.

Governor Holcomb announced in a press conference on March 23, 2021 that his executive order mandating masks/face coverings for all Hoosiers would be rescinded effective today April 6, 2021 with exceptions for schools and state government facilities. Masks will continue to be required for K-12 educational facilities per Executive Order 21-09 (Click here to view). As a result, Valparaiso Community Schools will continue to require masks for students and staff. Dear Valparaiso Schools Community,

During last week’s update, Governor Holcomb and State Health Commissioner Dr. Kristina Box announced new guidance for schools that takes effect today, February 8, 2021. This guidance modifies the definition of a direct contact in the classroom based on current research on transmission in the school setting.

The new definition of a direct contact applies to the classroom setting and includes only those individuals who were within 3 feet of a positive case irrespective of masks. The Indiana State Department of Health and Porter County Health Department will no longer require contact tracing when students are able to spread apart at least 3 feet in a classroom, desks are facing forward, AND masks are worn at all times. If masks were not worn at all times, contact tracing within 6 feet of a positive case will still apply. Please note, these modifications do not apply to meal times, athletics, band, orchestra, or choir.

The VCS Return to Learn plan has been updated to reflect these new guidelines (Click here to view). We will continue to keep you informed as new guidance and recommendations for schools are released.

Good afternoon Valparaiso Schools Community,

It is hard to believe that February is here and that we’ve successfully completed four more weeks of our Wednesday eLearning days.  We want to once again express our understanding that for many of you, these days require the addition or extension of child care services for your family.  If that is the case, we want to support you in meeting that need.

Our community partners, Boys & Girls Club and the YMCA, provide child care services during eLearning Wednesdays. All families are welcome to utilize these flexible child care programs that allow students to attend for a full or partial day with health protocols in place.  Both of these agencies support students in completing their weekly eLearning assignments on-site, and parents at home with their children on Wednesdays may also consider this option.  Free transportation, breakfast, and lunch are provided.  For more information or to register your student for child care with these partners, please access the links below.

Fee assistance associated with child care for Wednesday eLearning is available to families.  There are no prerequisites to requesting fee assistance, and financial support may be applicable to child care facilities beyond Boys & Girls Club and the YMCA.  Also, families with unique child care circumstances specific to the needs of their child should reach out to VCS for support in developing an individualized plan. Click here to contact VCS about child care fee assistance and additional support and resources.

Click here to access the additional support and resources page on the VCS website.

Please allow us to assist you in any way we can.  We thank you for your continued partnership.

Good Afternoon Vikings,

As a result of Porter County’s COVID-19 Alert Level change to Orange Status and guidance from the Porter County Health Department, Valparaiso Community Schools operations will align to the Orange Status protocols in the updated Return to Learn plan effective today, January 29, 2021. Please note, this status change will impact extracurricular events and does not affect health and safety protocols in the schoolhouse.

Although the metrics in our county are improving, it is critical to continue our high level of vigilance in adhering to safety protocols both in the schoolhouse and in the community. Thus far, we have witnessed a tremendous community effort to maintain a healthy and safe environment for students, staff, families, and our greater Valparaiso community. We will continue to work through these difficult times together.

Dear Valparaiso Schools Community,

Thank you to those who have submitted comments or signed up to participate in the virtual Town Hall Forum being held on Wednesday, December 2nd at 5:30 p.m. with limited in-person capacity at the VHS Cafeteria. The administration has received feedback on the benefits of the current model of eLearning Wednesdays. In order to design a system with the best outcomes for the most people (including teachers, families, and our in-person, remote, and quarantined learners) while also maintaining a healthy environment, the administration requests your feedback on the specific challenges that the current system has created for your student or family. Click the following link to access the original message: Town Hall Forum Letter

As a reminder, there are multiple ways for the public to engage in this process:

  • Anyone unable to attend virtually or in-person can submit their comments prior to the event at the following link: VCS Town Hall Public Participation Form which will close at 4 pm on December 2nd.  (*We are sensitive to the personal nature of each family’s experience with these challenges. Please note, we have added an option for individuals to remain confidential.)

  • Additionally, a  ZOOM link will be provided to those who wish to supply live input and provide the opportunity for any follow up dialogue with the administration.  Note that ZOOM participants will be muted until they are called on to add their input and will be limited to three minutes.  Sign up here to receive the ZOOM link for live public participation.

  • Finally, the Town Hall will be broadcasted for viewing on the VCS YouTube channel for anyone who wishes to only watch the proceedings. Access the Youtube link here: https://youtu.be/mXzU3B-Mb8Y

Dear Valparaiso Community Schools Families and Staff,

We hope you had a restful and reflective extended holiday weekend. We certainly have much to be thankful for this fall as we have navigated these uncharted waters together. As we prepare to re-enter the schoolhouse Monday, please remember to self screen for symptoms everyday. Parents, please help your children to self screen as well.  Anyone displaying even the mildest of symptoms should stay home.

Please continue your vigilance in doing your part to keep our school community healthy and safe by wearing a mask, maintaining physical distance, washing your hands frequently, and sanitizing common touch surfaces.

We commend our school community for the mitigation efforts that have been demonstrated thus far. Thank you for continuing to work together to keep people safe while maintaining continuity of learning.

Dear Valparaiso Schools Community Members,

Please join us on Wednesday, December 2nd at 5:30 pm for a virtual town hall meeting with limited in-person capacity at the VHS Cafeteria.  Teachers and other stakeholders have identified various benefits in extending Wednesday eLearning Days through the end of the second semester beyond the original December 9th end date (those benefits are listed below); however, the recent community survey revealed potential hardships for students and families associated with this model. In order to design a system with the best outcomes for the most people (including teachers, families, and our in-person, remote, and quarantined learners) while also maintaining a healthy environment, the administration requests your feedback on the specific challenges that the current system has created for your student or family. We believe it is important to hear from multiple perspectives in order to either extend and improve the current model or design an alternative system for the second semester.

For background, the current system of Wednesday eLearning Days was implemented in September to provide professional development opportunities for teachers to design and deploy quality dual platform teaching and learning. By many accounts, this end has been accomplished; however, the time for task management associated with the dual platforms has been identified by both teachers and administration as a significant increase over traditional teaching models and needs to be addressed in this next model design.  Additionally, the time on Wednesday without students has allowed for a midweek deep cleaning of every building to maintain the health and safety of the learning environment.

Since Porter County is currently in RED STATUS according to the Indiana State Department of Health, the in-person attendance at the VHS Cafeteria will be limited to 25 individuals (should Porter County be in ORANGE STATUS on December 2nd, the in-person attendance will be limited to 50 people); however, we have multiple ways for the public to engage in this process:

  • Anyone unable to attend virtually or in-person can submit their comments prior to the event at the following link: VCS Town Hall Public Participation Form which will close at 4 pm on December 2nd.

Thank you for your continued partnership as we move forward together through this difficult time.

Valparaiso Community Schools Families and Staff,

We anticipate that as of tomorrow the Indiana State Health Department’s dashboard will be updated to show Porter County to be in Red status. The Porter County COVID Alert Level has already been updated to Red status as a result of the Weekly Cases per 100,000 Residents (902) and the 7-Day All Tests Positivity Rate (16.3%).

As a reminder, we received guidance from the Porter County Health Department about maintaining an in-person learning option while the county is in Orange or Red status. Valparaiso Community Schools would move to fully remote for an individual school or the entire district ONLY IF one of the following three conditions is present:

  1. There is a government ordered stay-in-place mandate for the community, county, or state.

  2. An individual building or the entire district experiences a depletion of personnel critical to daily operations in the form that so many staff (teachers, custodians, food service, etc.) are out on quarantine that in-person learning cannot effectively be conducted.

  3. There is a fundamental breakdown in the designed system where rampant in-school transmissions occur.

The Return to Learn Draft that was shared with you last week has been under review and will be presented to the Valparaiso Community Schools Board of Trustees at their regular meeting on Thursday, November 19th.

We will continue to monitor guidance from state and local officials, staffing levels, and COVID-19 cases in our school community. We would like to take this opportunity to recognize the outstanding efforts of the school community in mitigating the spread of COVID-19 in the schoolhouse. Please remain vigilant and continue at-home screening, wearing a mask, maintaining physical distance, regularly washing your hands, and sanitizing common touch areas.

Valparaiso Community Schools Families and Staff,

In previous communications, we have mentioned a forthcoming change to the VCS Return to Learn plan to better align with Porter County Health Department and state guidance. We would like to share with you a DRAFT of the updated Return to Learn plan in an effort to keep our school community informed. Click the following link to access the Return to Learn draft: VCS Return to Learn Draft November 2020. This file will also be posted to our website.

Based on the Indiana State Department of Health and Porter County Health Department Data, Porter County is currently in Orange Status. As a result of Porter County’s Orange status, our school operations would align to the Orange status protocols in the updated Return to Learn plan.

The PCHD data can be found here: https://www.porterco.org/1663/COVID-19-Charts-Graphs and the ISDH map of Indiana data can be found here: https://www.coronavirus.in.gov/2393.htm. Also, our VCS COVID-19 dashboard is updated every Friday and can be found here: VCS COVID-19 Dashboard

In her recent letter, Porter County Health Officer Dr. Maria Stamp acknowledged the success of schools in minimizing transmission risk and shared guidance for school operations while Porter County is in Orange or Red status.

As you may recall, Valparaiso Community Schools would move to fully remote for an individual school or the entire district ONLY IF one of the following three conditions is present:

  1. There is a government ordered stay-in-place mandate for the community, county, or state.
  2. An individual building or the entire district experiences a depletion of human capital in the form that so many staff (teachers, custodians, food service, etc.) are out on quarantine that in-person learning cannot effectively be conducted.
  3. There is a fundamental breakdown in the designed system where rampant in-school transmissions occur.

We believe that schools are the best place for kids for learning and health. It is critical that our school community continues to do their part to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 by self-screening, wearing a mask, maintaining physical distance, washing your hands, and sanitizing common touch surfaces. We will continue to keep you informed as we navigate the ever-changing COVID-19 environment.

VCS Families and Staff,

In an effort to keep our school community informed, I would like to provide an update to all VCS families. As we continue to monitor the cases of COVID-19 in our state, county, and schools, Memorial Elementary has over 30% of in-person learners and many staff members currently in quarantine as direct contacts of COVID-19 individuals both in and outside of school. The impact of quarantines has led to a depletion of human capital at Memorial Elementary that does not allow for effective in-person learning. For this reason, we have made the difficult decision to move all Memorial Elementary students to REMOTE LEARNING STATUS beginning Wednesday, November 4th through Monday, November 16th.

While contact tracing has shown no evidence of spread within the school, we have made this decision in the best interest of students and staff and in accordance with the guidance shared with families last week. As a reminder, Valparaiso Community Schools may move to fully remote for an individual school or the entire district IF one of the following three conditions is present:

  1. There is a government ordered stay-in-place mandate for the community, county, or state.

  3. There is a fundamental breakdown in the designed system where rampant in-school transmissions occur.

Together, we will get through this newest challenge, and continue to do what is best for students and staff.

Dear VCS Families & Staff,

We would like to bring to your attention a few items of importance as we move through fall into the winter season.  Please take this opportunity to review your school communications preferences in Skyward Family Access.  It is critical that this information is up-to-date and accurate in the event of a weather closure or delay.  Click here to learn how to update your communications preferences.

Weather Delay Change

Due to later start times for the 2020-21 school year, we will employ 90-minute weather delays when necessary instead of the traditional 2-hour delay. In such an instance, bus pick up, student drop off, and school start times will be pushed back exactly 90 minutes. School start times for a 90-minute delay will be as follows:

VHS: 9:26 a.m.

Middle Schools: 9:49 a.m.

Elementary Schools: 10:45 a.m.

Morning bus times will be approximately 90 minutes later than their normal run times. For example, if your bus pick-up is normally 6:55 a.m., the adjusted time would be approximately 8:25 a.m.  An inclement weather delay will affect start times for in-person and remote learners.  Dismissal times will remain the same.

Halloween Reminder

We understand many families will be celebrating Halloween this weekend. If taking part in Halloween festivities, please continue to carefully follow the established safety protocols of wearing a mask, maintaining physical distance, washing your hands, and sanitizing common touch surfaces. These safety protocols are just as important in the community as they are inside schoolhouse walls.

Daylight Savings Time

Finally, please be reminded that daylight savings time ends this Sunday, November 1. Be sure to set your clocks back or “fall back” one hour.

Thank you for your continued partnership in educating your children. Stay safe and healthy!

Valparaiso Community Schools Families and Staff,

We will continue to coordinate with the Porter County Health Department. It is our intent to keep you informed as we continue to learn how to live in this COVID-19 environment.

Good afternoon Vikings,

As we wrap up the month of October and enjoy the autumnal colorscape, the opportunity to reflect on the semester and our Covid-19 response thus far presents itself.  Since opening our doors August 12, we have registered 35 positive cases, 325 direct contacts resulting in quarantine, and no known in-school transmissions--these numbers include new cases since the last dashboard update on October 23.  As a reminder, our data dashboard is located here and is updated every Friday.  The relative success of the system that has been designed is credit that should be shared across the board: from the parents and students who are responsible for self-screening and staying home with any onset of symptoms to the amazing responsibility our students and staff have demonstrated in wearing masks, frequently washing hands and staying as physically distant as possible to our teachers and custodial staff working to keep common touch surfaces sanitized throughout the day, everyone’s efforts have contributed to the opportunity to maintain an in-person learning option.

As the critical community data points continue to climb, our collective vigilance in adhering to these best practices becomes increasingly important.  The Indiana State Health Department’s dashboard was updated today and shows Porter County to be in Orange status as a result of the number of Weekly Cases per 100,000 Residents (320) and the 7-Day All Tests Positivity Rate (8.41%).

What does Orange status mean for Valparaiso Community Schools and what will happen if Porter County moves to Red status?

Dr. Maria Stamp, Health Officer for the Porter County Health Department, has recognized the effectiveness of the schools in implementing best practices for viral transmission mitigation.  In her recent letter to the Porter County Superintendents (attached), she outlines guidelines for how schools can maintain an in-person learning option while Porter County is in Orange or Red status.  Specifically, Valparaiso Community Schools would move to fully remote for an individual school or the entire district ONLY IF one of the following three conditions is present:

Should any of these conditions be met, communication through our Skylert system would be deployed to alert the affected staff, students and families as well as the rest of the school community.  Furthermore, we are currently in the process of updating our Return to Learn plan to reflect the state’s color-coding system as well as the Porter County Health Department’s most recent guidance.  We will continue to post all district-wide communications on the COVID-19 News & Updates page on the district website.

Dear Valpo Staff and Families,

The Valparaiso Community Schools COVID-19 Dashboard has been updated. You may access the dashboard at this link: VCS COVID-19 Dashboard. As a reminder, this dashboard will be updated weekly on Fridays.

VCS is committed to providing the safest possible learning environment for our students and staff. As stated in Dr. McCall’s letter (Click here) last week, we will get through these difficult times together. It is imperative for the continuation of in-person learning that we stay vigilant and disciplined in our efforts to remain healthy by self-screening, avoiding large gatherings, wearing a mask, physical distancing, washing your hands, and sanitizing common-touch areas.

Thank you for your continued support and partnership as we navigate the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Dear Valpo Staff and Families,

We have had an excellent nine weeks of school to start the year.  Our students and staff have adjusted to the challenges that the fall has presented them, and they have risen to the occasion with remarkable efforts by all.  Please know that keeping our students, staff, and community healthy while providing continuous learning and positive relationship-building opportunities has been our top priority since last March.  As we have done throughout the semester, our staff is actively communicating with the Porter County Health Department to monitor the number of COVID-19 cases in our schools, Center Township, Porter County, and Indiana overall.  As of Thursday (October 15), VCS has reported 21 total cases of COVID-19 in our schools, which have impacted 217 direct contacts resulting in quarantine; furthermore, there have been no known in-school transmissions since we returned to school August 12th.  In an effort to provide more communication on this topic, a dashboard has been published on the district’s COVID-19 website, and it will be updated weekly on Fridays: https://www.valpo.k12.in.us/apps/pages/dashboard

According to the Porter County Health Department, the county’s positivity rate and new cases per 100,000 people has increased steadily over the past several weeks.  The PCHD data can be found here: https://www.porterco.org/1663/COVID-19-Charts-Graphs and the ISDH map of Indiana data can be found here: https://www.coronavirus.in.gov/2393.htm

How the continued spread of COVID-19 will impact school operations is an ongoing conversation between VCS and PCHD officials.  Specific township data, the rate of spread in Porter County among children age 0 to 19, hospitalization rate, and the transmission risk mitigation strategies already in place at our school buildings are all factors to be considered when making those determinations.  PCHD will soon be releasing their updated guide that will be aligned to the state’s guidance and then VCS will realign its own color-coded Return-to-Learn plan to reflect the same Blue-Yellow-Orange-Red structure.

Please continue to do your part in lowering the community transmission rate and keeping Valparaiso Community Schools with an in-person learning option: self-screen, avoid large gatherings, wear a mask when around others, wash your hands, and sanitize common-touch areas.

We are exceedingly proud of the work that has been done by our staff and students as well as the support of our families during the COVID response.  Undoubtedly, we will get through these difficult times because we will do so together.

Partners in Education,

Dear VCS Families,

As we approach the first Wednesday eLearning day, we would like to share with you information intended to assist with making these schedule adjustments. This series of weekly Wednesday eLearning days begins on Wednesday, September 23, 2020 and runs through December 9, 2020. Please reference the revised 2020-2021 school year calendar here: Revised 2020-2021 School Year Calendar

If your family is in need of financial support toward child care services for Wednesday eLearning days, please call your child’s school to speak with the social worker for assistance.

An eLearning day is different from our current setting of blended synchronous learning (BSL).  In the BSL environment, teachers are actively engaged with both in-person and remote learners synchronously throughout the day.  In an eLearning format, teachers will prepare instructional materials and activities that students will asynchronously engage with through independent study.  Examples of independent study include, but are not limited to: reading, writing, research, relevant projects, etc.

eLearning Information for Parents & Students

  • All eLearning materials and instructions will be posted and made available to students by 8:00 a.m. on Wednesday morning; however, teachers may post their lessons earlier. Teachers will communicate to students/parents when the Wednesday eLearning work will be posted each week.

  • Teachers will supply students with a specific checklist of activities that need to be completed during eLearning.

  • Wednesday eLearning lessons should maintain the flow of learning from Tuesday to Thursday.

  • Students are expected to complete assigned lessons and activities by the start of the school day on Thursday morning.  Failure to participate may result in a lower grade and will disrupt the flow of learning between Tuesday and Thursday.

  • Teachers will supply 60-90 minutes of “office hours” for students during Wednesday eLearning, but will utilize the balance of their time for developing proficiency in BSL with their colleagues.  The eLearning days will also provide opportunities for classified staff to improve protocols in a COVID environment and assist in blended synchronous learning adjustments.

Thank you for your continued support of our schools, our educators, and our students.

Good Afternoon Valparaiso Community,

The disruption to the Valparaiso Community Schools internet system added yet another challenge to teaching and learning in this COVID-19 environment. Fortunately, we are confident the intentional attacks on the internet system have been stopped and service has returned to normal. In addition, we have no indication that any sensitive data was compromised.

“See Something, Say Something” is much more than a nice phrase. When each of us takes action when we see something wrong, good results can occur. Due to the actions of individuals who recognized wrongdoing, along with the efforts of our technology professionals, VCS is able to return to the reliable use of the internet system. The person responsible will be accountable.

VCS officials will be researching additional options to improve our internet system defenses to avoid future interruptions. Please take this opportunity to familiarize yourself with the See Something, Say Something form located on the district website. In addition, let us remind ourselves and our children the importance of “See Something, Say Something.”

Respectfully,

Michael J. Berta Jr.

Due to COVID-19, the USDA is providing funding to schools so all students eat free. A free qualified breakfast and lunch will be available to all children 18 years old and under beginning Monday, September 21, 2020 through December 17, 2020.

These meals will be available to all VCS in-person learners in the school cafeteria and by curbside pickup for remote learners, including non-VCS students and children not yet in school. All curbside pickup meals must be pre-ordered at https://www.valpo.k12.in.us/apps/pages/nutrition

VCS In-Person Learners

In-person learners may receive these free meals at school during their designated breakfast and lunch times. This applies only to qualified meals, not snacks and beverages.  A qualified meal consists of items from at least three food groups, one of which must be a fruit or vegetable. VCS In-Person Learners will also receive a retroactive credit to their cafeteria account for qualified meals purchased from the beginning of the school year.

On Wednesday eLearning days, in-person students will be able to pre-order meals for curbside pickup from 10:00 am - 11:00 am at Thomas Jefferson Middle School or Ben Franklin Middle School. Meals must be pre-ordered for Wednesday curbside pickup. To pre-order, please visit http://www.valpo.k12.in.us/apps/pages/nutrition. You will choose your pickup location when you pre-order.

Remote Learners

Remote learning families will have the opportunity to obtain free meals with daily curbside pickup. Remote learners (VCS or other schools) must pre-order meals at http://www.valpo.k12.in.us/apps/pages/nutrition. Curbside pickup is available every day from 10:00 am - 11:00 am at Thomas Jefferson Middle School or Ben Franklin Middle School. You will choose your pickup location when you pre-order.

If you have questions regarding free meals or how to order, please call the School Nutrition office at (219) 531-3050.

Good Afternoon Valparaiso Community,

As you may know, VCS is experiencing frequent intentional internet service disruptions causing slow connection and at times no internet access. We recognize that this is unacceptable and understand the frustration these outages add to the COVID-19 learning environment.  A police report has been filed as these attacks are purposeful and malicious criminal acts. We will work with law enforcement to the fullest extent to prosecute any individuals or groups that attack our systems.

Our technology staff continues to work diligently to remedy the ongoing internet disruptions. Also, VCS has employed independent assistance to find a solution. We will keep you informed on the progress of the situation as appropriate. Thank you for your continued support of our schools, our educators, and our students.

Good Afternoon Valparaiso Community,

Please know the Valparaiso Community Schools staff is continuously working to improve services for our students. The pandemic has presented significant challenges to these services that we continue to problem solve.

Last night, the Board of School Trustees approved the recommendation to dedicate 11 days to eLearning/Independent Learning on the school calendar. On eLearning days, K-12 students will work from home on eLearning/Independent Learning assignments designed by their teacher relevant to their regular studies. On those days, teachers will be engaged in learning activities designed to improve services for in-person and remote learners. The first at-home eLearning day is September 23rd and the final day is December 9th. Attached is a revised 2020-2021 VCS school calendar for your reference. Please note, Election Day on November 3, 2020 is an eLearning Day and students will not report for in-person learning.

Also attached, you will find child care information provided by VCS partners, the YMCA and  Boys & Girls Club. These are for your reference and use should you have need.

One of the lessons learned from the pandemic is that adapting to changes caused by COVID-19 is very important. This is true for the teaching-learning process as it is everywhere else. We recognize a change in schedule such as with this weekly eLearning day can be an inconvenience. However, we believe the long term benefit to our students will be significant.

Should you have any questions, please feel free to contact me or the principal of the school your child attends. Additional information will be sent to you in future communications.

Good Morning Valparaiso Community,

Thank you all for your incredible support and understanding as we have engaged in the monumental task of returning to school under the current conditions of a pandemic.  Our teachers and staff have worked hard to deliver quality lessons in both the in-person and remote learning platforms. Although our teachers have honed their craft and have learned much over the last several weeks, it has become evident that more time is needed to effectively prepare lessons, deliver instruction, and provide feedback in these dual platforms. As such, it is the recommendation of the teachers and administration that the School Board of Trustees consider adopting a weekly Wednesday eLearning day for the rest of the semester.  Teachers will dedicate this time to preparing and executing dual-platform lessons while also engaging in professional development on these same topics.  The Board will be considering the matter at its special meeting this Thursday, September 10th at 6 pm at Cooks Corners Elementary School.  If approved by the Board, ALL students will execute an eLearning Day every Wednesday from September 23rd through December 9th (December 16th is Final Exams for VHS and will be a regular day for in-person learners).  Please also note that Election Day, Tuesday, November 3rd was originally slated to be an eLearning Day and would now convert to a regular instructional day due to the Wednesday eLearning Days under this proposal.

We understand that this investment in time will likely cause a change in Wednesday schedules for many of our families, so we are working diligently with community partners to develop solutions for child care and food service.

Thank you for your continued support of our schools, our educators, and our students. Your partnership is valued and appreciated.

Respectfully,

Valparaiso Community Schools Families and Staff,

As the Labor Day Holiday approaches, please be reminded of the importance of following the established health and safety protocols to help minimize risks for our students, staff, families, and community members. Adherence to these health and safety protocols is essential within the schoolhouse and in the community especially over the extended holiday weekend. While we recognize these protocols were not part of our pre pandemic everyday life, they are essential now for the continuation of in-person learning.

Thus far, our students and staff have taken outstanding actions with wearing masks, physical distancing, hygiene, and acting in a responsible manner. However, we all must continue to do our part to be extra vigilant while the COVID-19 virus remains a factor.

We ask that all members of our school community carefully follow these safety procedures during the holiday weekend.

Thank you for your attention to this important communication. Have a safe and healthy Labor Day weekend!

Respectfully,

Dear VCS Community,

On Friday, August 14 & Monday, August 17, VCS experienced unexpected internet access disruptions. In both instances, internet access was fully restored in under 40 minutes. The disruptions were determined to be acts of malicious intent.

VCS technology staff is working with our internet service providers to fully investigate the situation and to mitigate any future disruption attempts.

We would like to take this opportunity to address a few technology related questions that have been received during the first week of school. Please take a moment to read through the questions and answers below.

Q: How do I view my child’s courses in Canvas?

A: Parents are able to create a parent account in order to login to Canvas to observe their students’ courses. If you have not already created a Parent Account, please contact your student’s teacher to obtain your parent login information. If you already have an account and need assistance logging in please contact your child’s teacher. Please note: logging in with your parent account does not give you access to help your child with their homework. It only allows you to see your child’s Canvas account as an observer. In order to assist your child with their work, you need to have your child log in as themselves into their Canvas course. A helpful tutorial can be found here: How to Pair Parent to Student Canvas Accounts (for observation)

Q: I am concerned about VCS bandwidth usage. Does VCS have adequate bandwidth to support live streaming throughout the district?

A: Yes, we have doubled our capacity since last school year and we plan to bring the district to a total of 6 gigabit per second internet egress in September.

Q: How can my remote learner receive assistance with Skyward and Canvas issues?

A: Remote learners can receive help with Skyward and Canvas issues by using this form: Remote Learner Skyward/Canvas Help Desk

Q: What if I experience the need to replace or repair a school-issued device?

A: If you experience a broken device or a device that needs repairs, please go to the VCS Device Repair page to complete a device repair form.  If a device replacement would be necessary, the exchange would be made by appointme
Valparaiso Community School Parents and Guardians,

I am writing to communicate what I have determined to be important information as we, a community, prepare for the Return to Learning on Wednesday, August 12.

Actions in school will be different in many ways from what has been customary.  Primarily, during the first days and even weeks after school begins, emphasis must be on returning to an environment in which we must learn to live.  Thus, time is to be spent on protocols and procedures for everyone to follow, such as the wearing of masks and physical distancing, to name two.  Other examples are defined in the District plan as well as individual school plans.  It may be difficult for some remote learners to relate to some of these procedural topics.  However, it is essential for the in-person learner that staff dedicate the time to the discussion of these topics prior to beginning instruction in academics.

Likewise, re-learning to work and socialize in school after a period of isolation from the schoolhouse deserves time dedicated to relationship development.  The dynamics in a classroom are often very different than that of a home among family.  In addition, the results of the pandemic have impacted most of us in multiple ways.  It is important to take the time in the initial days and weeks of school to tell our stories and listen to those of others.  To that end, a variety of topics have been prepared for use in our classrooms during the beginning days and weeks of school designed to develop relationships.  The goal here is to assimilate back to the school environment and establish the relationships critical to the teaching learning process.

Actions have been taken to offer the in-person and remote learning options requested by Valparaiso families.  Although these actions have been designed carefully and with attention to detail, it is possible the system may experience problems.  Should problems occur, your patience and understanding is appreciated.  Our staff will problem solve as quickly as they can.  Furthermore, instruction in-person and in a remote learning environment is a new and challenging expectation for many educators.  As with most new, as well as challenging actions, a learning curve is anticipated as we strive for excellence.  The delivery of instruction in dual platforms is a journey I ask you to take with each instructor.  Together, we can achieve great results for our students.

Should the incidence of COVID-19 increase in the community and/or the schools to a level that results in a decision for schools to close, it is important to proactively prepare plans for an all remote learning environment.

Finally, please pledge to establish the daily practice of a wellness exam each day before your child is sent to school for in-person learning.  The exam is a good practice for remote learners too.  Look for the symptoms defined in the Return To Learn Plan such as fever, coughing, etc.  Should a child have symptoms, or not feel good, do not send the child to school.  The success of the continuation of in-person learning is dependent on the behavior of each one of us in the community.  By nature of this virus, we are interdependent on each other.  We each need to take the necessary actions.

Respectfully,

Michael Berta

Interim Superintendent of Schools

Dear VCS Community,

The events and conversations over these months of living in a pandemic environment should leave little doubt as to how critical public schools are to the Valparaiso community. Schools are often at the foundation of family life each day.  Once upon a time, the primary function of school was to offer an academic experience.  Over the years, our schools have evolved into so much more.  Public schools are a source of critical services for students and families in addition to offering opportunities for academic excellence.  Public schools provide meal programs, health interventions, social, behavioral, recreational, and mental health assistance to name just a few of the critical services for students and families.  School closure interferes with the delivery of these important services and hinders the development of both peer and student-teacher relationships.

When schools are prepared for occupancy, it is important they be open and available for in-person learning and for critical services to be effectively delivered. With the support of the Porter County Department of Health, and through the implementation of the VCS Return to Learn Plan, our schools are prepared for occupancy.  On Wednesday, August 12 the Valparaiso Community Schools will reopen in Green Status, and staff will welcome students for in-person learning and participation in critical services.  Those families who choose the remote learning option will be welcomed as well.

Understand, reopening school and returning to classrooms and critical services in a COVID-19 environment will require discipline and strict attention to the protocols defined in the VCS Return to Learn Plan as well as to individual school plans designed by principals and staff.  Keeping schools safe and open will depend on the behaviors and use of protocols by people in the entire community.  The African Proverb “It takes the whole village to raise the child” is very relevant in the reopening of school.  Since schools have been closed, the incidence of COVID-19 reported by the Porter County Department of Health has originated outside of the school walls, with most cases tracked to the absence of protocols, including not wearing masks and unacceptable physical distancing.  We will be able to keep school safe and open only if the entire community, in and out of the schoolhouse, regularly deploys these safety protocols.

The decision to open schools and offer learning in-person is made with educational as well as professional health input.  Professionals representing the Valparaiso Community Schools and the Porter County Health Department have collaborated regularly over these months, resulting in data and information supporting the return to learning.  As one example of this collaboration, please reference the attached document from Dr. Maria Stamp, Porter County Health Officer.

The reality is, we will most likely have cases of COVID-19 occur in our schools.  School personnel will work quickly to identify impacted people and deploy actions including quarantine and remote learning.  Some extracurricular and other activities may need to be paused from time to time to address exposure.  A class, school, and even the district may need to close in order to mitigate COVID-19 transmission.  Remote learning may be required of some or many students should the Department of Health determine it necessary.  We can increase the probability of keeping our schools open for learning and keeping one another healthy and safe when we all deploy the actions in the Return to Learn Plan and adhere to the advice of the Health Department.

Public education and public health are both critical to our community and interdependent upon each other.  COVID-19 has impacted the schools we love and the health we cherish.  In response, our schools can assist in teaching new habits such as wearing a mask, physical distancing, and keeping our hands clean to make a positive difference in ending this virus.  The success of keeping our schools open for learning and critical services is dependent on all of our actions.

Letter from Dr. Maria Stamp, Porter County Health Officer

Dear VCS Community,

As the 2020-21 school year approaches, our school district remains committed to the development of the whole child.  Now, more than ever, it is critical for VCS, in collaboration with families, community partners, and other stakeholders, to intentionally promote not only academic development, but also physical, social, and emotional health.  In the coming weeks, you will receive resources to assist with the return to teaching and learning in the current pandemic environment and to promote the growth of the whole child.

Today we would like to begin this resource share with attention to physical health and guidance for cloth face coverings.  This document includes best practices for proper use and care of these face masks. Please take a moment to read through the document below and begin using this information to prepare your children.

As always, we appreciate your support and partnership in education.

Dear VCS Community,

As you are aware, Valparaiso Community Schools has created an option for families to participate in Remote Learning for the 2020-21 school year in order to meet the needs of our families during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The addition of the Remote Learning model creates an added responsibility for teachers.  A collaborative effort by teachers and administrators produced a new daily schedule for the 2020-21 school year for all students regardless of Remote or In-Person status. To that end, the new Instructional Times for all students are as follows (see the attached document for a more detailed look at the daily schedules):

2020-21 School Day

VHS: 7:56-2:25

Middle Schools: 8:19-2:50

Elementary Schools: 9:15-3:20

The new, School Board approved schedule will enable our teachers to have more time dedicated toward Remote and In-Person Learning initiatives while maintaining adherence to the statutory requirements for instructional minutes.  Additional time will better serve both remote and in-person learners by providing teachers extra minutes dedicated to video creation and uploading, student conferencing, activity curation, and enhanced lesson design. Thank you for your continued support and partnership as we navigate the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic.

2020-2021 Daily Schedule Changes

Valparaiso Community Schools Parents and Staff,

Registration for the 2020-21 school year is open now in Skyward Family Access.  As you participate in the process to register your child for the 2020-21 school year, please know much thought and effort has been dedicated to design quality learning experiences.  In addition, attention has been directed to meet and exceed safety standards given the COVID environment we all live our lives in.   There is no guarantee COVID related problems will not occur.  However, protocols are in place to keep our staff and students healthy and safe.

Opinions regarding the reopening of schools are being expressed across the country.  Here in Valparaiso, I have received many emails expressing opinions about the reopening of schools.  For each opinion on a reopening topic there is often a completely opposite opinion on the same topic written by another person.  I chose not to respond to each email received as doing so would consume time better used for the work needed to meet the responsibilities of educational leadership.  Please refer to the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) document on the VCS website as this resource addresses much being communicated.

The use of masks/face coverings in school has received much attention from adults.  Please understand that wearing masks in school is required and not an option when conditions exist.  Examples of such conditions include when appropriate physical distancing does not exist, the teacher has a health condition that would possibly be compromised, or a student in the class has a health condition that may be compromised.  The teacher is the authority in the classroom and has the responsibility to direct students to put a mask on when the teacher determines the conditions require it.  This is a necessary and non negotiable element of maintaining a safe and healthy learning environment.  Should you find this unacceptable for whatever reason, choose remote learning as the registration option.

It is my unwavering belief that public education is at the heart of our nation.  Students experiencing teaching and learning in our classrooms as well as their participation in relationship development with adults and one another cannot be duplicated.  These months we have just experienced when schools were not available should teach us just how necessary in person education is for our young people and also reinforce how vital the skilled and talented educator is in the life of children.  Schools are not just a place for our kids to go.  Schools are places where dedicated  adults in a variety of roles nurture the academic, social, physical, and emotional development of our future.

Daily, local COVID-19 data as provided by the Porter County Health Department is monitored for the decision making process of what “color” status in which school will reopen.  Simultaneously, a model is being designed to better use data for these decision making processes.  Parents and staff will be informed of school reopening status on our website, with e-mail, and via automated phone call.  The information regarding COVID-19 changes rapidly as medical and science professionals learn from their work.  We are positioned to change the Valparaiso Community Schools reopening plan and relevant protocols should the medical and scientific results require changes.

Respectfully,

Michael J. Berta Jr.

Interim Superintendent of Schools

Return to Learn Community Comments

Thank you for your support as we continue to work through the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. We appreciate your partnership in education.

Dear VCS Community,

Please accept our sincere appreciation for your support and patience as we continue to work through the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. As we look forward to the 2020-21 school year, we understand that many of you are awaiting the release of our Return to Learn plan. We are pleased to announce that our plan will be released on July 6, 2020.

Our re-entry team, with over 25 members including administrators, directors, elementary and secondary principals, teachers, and other staff, has been meeting virtually on a weekly basis to discuss and design the Return to Learn plan. Our return to school decisions are based on guidance from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), Indiana State Department of Health (ISDH), Indiana Department of Education (IDOE), and the Porter County Health Department while considering parent and staff feedback.

At this time, VCS will follow our previously Board approved 2020-21 school year calendar. Our heartfelt thanks goes out to all of those working toward a safe return to learning for students and staff. We are looking forward to sharing the VCS Return to Learn plan with you on July 6, 2020 via email, the VCS website, and VCS social media.

2019-2020

May 18, 2020

Dear Valparaiso Community Schools Families and Community,

As the weather begins to warm and the school year wraps up in a very non-traditional way, please accept our sincere appreciation for the resilience and innovation on display from students, teachers, parents, and the community.  “We are Valpo” takes on a special meaning in the face of adversity, and 2020 has been exceptional.  The remote learning model has driven our teachers and students (and parents!) to think outside the box and grow outside their comfort zones.  The feedback via surveys and emails has been invaluable, and it helped to guide our continuous improvement in eLearning in the form of more Zoom meetings, more recorded lessons, checklists for parents/students, and the focus on everyone’s mental health.  Furthermore, the Food Distribution program every Friday at VHS has distributed almost 10,000 meals per week and the Dressed for School program continues to provide clothes for students in need.  “We are Valpo” indeed!

The Governor’s “Back on Track” plan will guide many of our activities this summer and beyond.  Although our Class of 2020 will not participate in a traditional commencement until July, we will be celebrating their success with a series of activities which will include:

  • an individual photo opportunity on the commencement stage in cap and gown.

  • a car parade the morning of May 31st which will go through downtown -- come out and cheer them on! Exact time dependent upon the train schedule and will be communicated soon.

  • a virtual ceremony at 3 pm livestreamed on Facebook and YouTube.

  • 20 booming fireworks to signify their accomplishment that evening at around 5:30.

We are so proud of this class and they are worth celebrating!

In addition to postponing the traditional commencement ceremony, Governor Holcomb’s plan as well as our own discussions with Health Services have driven the decision that all students returning to VCS in the fall will be able to exchange their textbooks and other instructional materials as well as electronic devices in July.  At that time, they will also be able to retrieve any personal items they may have left in their desks or lockers.  Given our size and the focus on keeping everyone as safe as possible, the prudent course of action is to wait until July.  More details will be communicated for this event in the coming weeks.

After the summer activities, the next question on everyone’s minds has been “What will the future look like?”  Many models are being discussed nationwide, and our administration team is investigating the models as well as their impact on all operations (teaching & learning, food service, transportation, custodial services, maintenance, etc.).  As more information becomes available from federal and state officials, we will engage the community in the conversation in what school can look like in the fall.  Until then, please enjoy the summer months, enjoy each other, stay safe, and be well!

April 17, 2020

Dear Parents and Guardians,

We would like to begin by thanking you for your participation in the recent eLearning  parent survey. While the results were overwhelmingly positive regarding this extended time of eLearning, we also want to acknowledge the suggestions for improvement that were shared through your comments.  Rest assured, our teachers and administrators have already begun shifting practices to improve everyone's experience as we continue with eLearning through the end of the 2019-20 school year. Your continued partnership with our teachers is greatly appreciated.

We have a lot of information to share in this letter as we endeavor to keep you updated.  It is important to us that we provide you with accurate and timely information. Please take a few minutes to thoroughly review this message.  Should you have any questions on the information below, please contact your child’s principal.

Calendar

  • All VCS schools will follow the revised school year calendar on our website.  We ask that families adhere to the e-learning schedule as closely as possible so that all students stay on track for the remainder of the school year.
  • May 22, 2020 will be the last day of school as approved by the VCS school board on April 16, 2020.  To see the updated calendar, please visit the following link: VCS Calendar
  • Please note the following highlights from the updated calendar:
    • Continuation of  the established M-W-F pattern of eLearning for the duration of the school year.
    • The May 5, 2020 eLearning day has been converted to a waiver day.
    • The May 15, 2020 weather make-up day has been converted to an eLearning day.

Grades

Our focus during this time will be to provide  feedback to students. To ensure we are grading in an equitable manner we will do the following:

Grading Information for Grades  8-12 (Credit Bearing Courses)

  • All students are required to continue participation in their classes to earn their 4th quarter grades.
    • Grades 8-11 Credit-bearing courses: Failure to participate may result in an “I” for incomplete and  require participation in future credit recovery opportunities.
    • Seniors: Failure to participate may result in an “F” for fourth-quarter even though the IDOE will allow schools to grant credit for enrollment.
  • Teachers will continue to provide instruction, activities, and feedback to students.
  • Teachers will establish the fourth-quarter grade for each student’s previous body of work in the course as outlined by guidance from the IDOE.
  • Students will continue to participate and earn grades through the end of the semester and may improve upon their established grade, but this grade may not be negatively impacted by these unique circumstances.
  • Final Exams
    • Instead of a traditional final exam, students in grades 9, 10, and 11 will complete a summative assignment for each course in which they are enrolled in order to demonstrate an understanding of essential topics from the second semester of the 2019-20 school year.  This will allow teaching and learning to continue through the end of the semester and remove the pressure of studying and preparing for a traditional final exam.
    • All seniors, as well as any students who will be participating in AP, IB, or Dual Credit exams, will be exempt from their respective summative assignment.
*Although seniors are exempt from summative assignments, some seniors may be required to complete a final exam that is associated with another institution in order to earn dual credit.
  • Per the IDOE, all seniors have been exempted from the ISTEP+10 Graduation Qualifying Exam.

Grading for Grades 3-8 Non-Credit Bearing Courses

  • All students are required to continue  participation in their classes for the remainder of the school year in order to earn their 4th quarter grades.
    • Failure to participate may result in not receiving a grade for the fourth quarter and a comment added to the report card stating, “Did Not Effectively Participate in eLearning”
  • Grades for the fourth quarter will be based on the grade assigned to students at the end of the third quarter.
  • Students will be “held harmless” for their fourth-quarter grades so long as they continue to participate in their designated classes. This means that students will not be penalized for the outcomes resulting from the eLearning experience.
  • Students will be given an opportunity to improve their fourth-quarter grade (based on third-quarter results) through continued participation, feedback, and reflection in areas of deficit.

Grading for K-2

  • All students are required to continue participation in their classes for the remainder of the school year in order to earn their 4th quarter grades.
    • Failure to participate may result in not receiving a grade for the fourth quarter.
  • Grades for the fourth quarter will be based on the following:
    • If adequate progress is being made in a skill area, a grade will be provided  for the fourth quarter report card.
    • Students will not be negatively impacted by the extended school closure, therefore, if student performance results in a lower grade for a specific skill area it will be left blank on the report card.
  • Any blank area on the report card will be explained through the narrative comments on the report card. Narrative comments relating to blank areas on the report card may state:
    • Did Not Participate Effectively in eLearning to receive a grade in (list content area).”
    • “Any space left blank during the fourth quarter denotes that the skill could not be measured through the remote learning environment.”

Summer School

  • There will be no summer school for elementary or middle school students.
  • Options for high school summer school are still being explored and information will be sent at a later date to those students who had previously enrolled in summer school.

Kindergarten Preregistration

  • Please visit our website for Kindergarten preregistration information. Preregistration for the fall needs to be completed by May 1, 2020.

School and extracurricular activities

  • All activities, camps, and programs have been canceled through June 30.

Graduation and Prom

  • The graduation ceremony will not be held in its traditional form.  It will be held virtually. Details will be sent out in the near future.  We know this is not the outcome we had hoped, but the Governor's directive and social distancing requirements make a traditional ceremony impossible at this time; however, we plan to organize a celebration of our seniors as soon as we have more information and a timeline about Indiana’s release from the current restrictions.  We understand the importance of celebrating our seniors and allowing them a chance to say goodbye to their peers and teachers. Please note: Graduation supplies ordered from Jostens will be available for curb-side pick up only on Wednesday, April 29th at VHS. Specific information will be distributed soon to seniors and their parents.
  • Unfortunately, prom has been canceled for the 2019-20 school year.

Returning Materials and Pickup of Items Left at School

  • VCS leadership teams are continuing to work out the details of collecting textbooks and devices at the conclusion of this school year.  Much of this information is dependent on timelines provided by the Governor as we progress through this extended period of school closures.
  • Gathering of all non-essential personal items left behind will also be coordinated at a later date.  Please continue to monitor communication from VCS and the FAQs on the website for updates.

FAQ

  • Please continue to utilize the eLearning FAQ on our district website for important information. This is a living document and  will be updated when appropriate.

Again, thank you for your continued partnership and support.  Please know we will continue to do our best to keep you informed with the latest information.  Take care, and stay healthy!

Stalwart Viking Parents and Guardians:

Let me begin with a heartfelt thank you for all you are doing to help our professionals continue teaching and learning in this new environment.  Please know that we are fully aware of both the personal and professional stressors you are experiencing, and to add the monitoring of eLearning to that burden is no easy task.  As we all venture together into this new way of doing business, I take comfort in knowing our school-home relationship can truly benefit from the partnerships we are building. I continue to use two words with our professionals, grace and flexibility.  Grace allows us to make mistakes and find gaps in our processes as we work toward perfecting eLearning, and doing business remotely.  Flexibility gives us the freedom to try new things, be mentally agile, and respond easily, albeit differently, to the many changes coming at us daily if not hourly.

To that point, we learned yesterday afternoon that we will not be returning to the buildings this school year.  Although many anticipated this announcement happening, our hearts sank upon hearing the words.  I have been privy to many school-based communications and have been watching Canvas activities; I can tell you honestly, our teachers and staff really miss seeing your children in their classrooms!

So, at this point, you are most likely wondering how the closing of schools for the remainder of the 2019-2020 school year impacts graduation, final exams, obtaining student belongings left behind in classrooms and lockers, the calendar, scholarships, and a myriad of other items of importance.  I do not have answers to all of your questions right now, but will be providing details on our website as our team gathers information.

Dr. McCormick and Governor Holcomb indicated very clearly in their messaging that adjustments to commencement must happen.  With that edict, we do know our traditional graduation ceremony will not be happening as planned. Our creative and competent VHS leadership and staff will develop a plan to celebrate the achievements of our graduating seniors, but what the ceremony will be exactly is yet unknown. Please watch for communications from Dr. Tobon and her team as plans develop.

Our eLearning will continue with a M-W-F schedule.  We are working on posting an updated school calendar for April and May on our website next week.  We are in discussion of what summer school might be for this year, but again, those details will be forthcoming once finalized.

In order to ensure we are providing your children with the best educational experience possible, as well as support you as parents/guardians, we are asking you to please complete the following survey by 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 8, 2020. The survey is accessible here: eLearning Parent Survey April 2020

I can't stress enough how much I appreciate everything you are doing and now we know definitively, we must continue to do it a bit longer than anticipated.  I know we can do this, and do it together as we build upon the important school-home relationship.

Stay healthy,

dr. julie lauck

Dr. Julie Lauck,

March 19, 2020

Dear Valparaiso Community Schools Families,

As we continue to work through the logistics of our new normal, we wanted to extend our heartfelt appreciation to all of you who are stepping up and assisting your children during this extended school closure due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Your partnership is how we will get through this unprecedented situation.

Governor Holcomb ordered today that schools will be closed until May 1, 2020. The governor acknowledged this date may change, but as of now May 1, 2020 is the date. We will continue our eLearning process and keep families and staff updated as further communication becomes available from local, state, and federal agencies.

We wanted to provide you with updates to assist you as we move forward:

  • Beginning March 23, 2020, the administration building will be reducing hours of operation from 8:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. If you need to come to the administration building, we are asking that you set up an appointment ahead of time by calling 219-531-3000 and leave a message.
  • The state has canceled student participation in state assessments for this school year. These assessments include IREAD-3, ILEARN, ISTEP+ (grade 10), I AM, and the WIDA Screener. More details from the IDOE can be found in this memo
    • The state is working on providing information regarding other assessments, such as AP, IB, and SATs.

Re: Extended eLearning

As we transition to eLearning due to extended school closure, we want to ensure that we are providing our families with information that will assist them in making this as positive an experience as possible.

Please access the Parent and Student eLearning Guidance here. This document will provide you with details concerning the expectations and delivery of digital instruction.  This information will also be on our website under Departments->Academics->eLearning.

We also want to ensure our students and families are provided with the tools necessary to complete work and participate in digital class activities.

  • All middle and high school students should have brought their devices home.
  • Elementary students who need devices may contact Mrs. Brandie Muha at [email protected].
    • Elementary devices may be picked up Monday at your child(ren)’s school after notifying Mrs. Muha. If you are unable to pick up on Monday, March 16, 2020, the option for pick-up will be available at the Administration building beginning on Tuesday, March 17, 2020.
  • Please be advised that parents are able to access the building on Monday, if needed, to gather any forgotten or needed belongings or to pick up medication.
  • Comcast is currently offering low-income families who are new customers 60 days of complimentary Internet Essentials service. More information can be found here.

For this extended eLearning experience, our district will be running eLearning days on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Friday.  This means that your child will have access to their teacher on these days. Teachers will be spending Tuesdays and Thursdays preparing lessons, providing feedback to students, and grading assignments. Your child is still able to access and complete work any day or time during the week.

We appreciate you and your partnership in your child’s education.  We know that it is a difficult scenario for all families to navigate this many days of online learning,, but working together we can make this a meaningful experience for our students in order to ensure the outcomes necessary for their continued growth and development.

Sincerely,

March 13, 2020

Dear Valparaiso Community Schools families,

As new information and recommendations have been emerging rapidly concerning COVID-19, Valparaiso Community Schools will be closed for all in-person instruction from Monday, March 16, 2020 through Friday, April 10, 2020. Spring break will remain as scheduled for the week of March 23, 2020.

Students will participate in eLearning during the weeks of March 16 - March 20, 2020 and March 30 - April 10, 2020. Updated eLearning guidance will be forthcoming.

Valparaiso Community Schools will have a tentative reopening date of Monday, April 13, 2020. We will keep the school community informed of changes as we move through this unprecedented situation. Continue to monitor your email and school website for updated information.

We reached this decision after consulting with state and local officials in an effort to adhere to Governor Holcomb’s recommendations to curb the advancement of COVID-19. We understand that closing our schools will have a significant impact on our families. We will continue to work with our community partners to identify support services and resources.

In order to ensure our students are prepared to participate in eLearning activities beginning next week, our staff have taken the following actions:

  • Students in grades 6 through 12 have been reminded to bring home their school-issued devices, chargers, and any necessary books and materials to continue learning.

  • Elementary students who have opted-in to receive a device to complete eLearning have received a school-issued device and charger to take home and use for e-learning assignments.

  • Elementary families who need to opt-in to receive a device during this period may contact Mrs. Brandie Muha, Director of Elementary Education at [email protected].

  • Teachers will provide students with any additional curricular materials they may need, including, but not limited to, workbooks, novels, packets, etc. Additionally, students have been encouraged to bring home anything else they may need from their lockers or desks.

Please be advised that parents are able to access the building on Monday, if needed, to gather any forgotten or needed belongings or to pick up medication. Beginning Tuesday, March 17, 2020 buildings will not be accessible during the period of school closure. If access is needed, you need to contact Dr. Lauck directly at [email protected]

Dear Porter County Community,

Closing of Porter County Schools due to COVID-19

On March 12, 2020, Governor Holcomb released new directives to protect Hoosiers from COVID-19. As part of these steps, Governor Holcomb has provided schools with a 20-day attendance waiver to help reduce the spread of the Coronavirus throughout our state.

After careful consideration and in consultation with Porter County Health Department and other Porter County Government officials, all seven Porter County Superintendents and Porter County Education Services are taking prudent and proactive measures to avert COVID-19 taking a foothold within our schools and community. As a result, all Porter County schools will exercise an option to conduct eLearning starting March 16, 2020 through April 10, 2020. The situation is extremely fluid and the date may be extended as we reassess the situation during the duration of the closure. Porter County administrators, in consultation with the Porter County Health Department, will reconvene on April 3, 2020 to reconsider future plans.

In an effort to continue educational instruction, eLearning assignments will be posted on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Teachers will clearly communicate office hours and expectations with students/families.

Sports/Extracurricular Activities (as of 3/16)

  • All extracurricular activities and sporting events, including rehearsals and practices, are immediately postponed until school is reopened
  • All activities/performances are postponed
  • Re-scheduling of events will be determined on a case-by-case basis

Community Use of School Facilities

  • All school facilities, including sports courts/fields, will remain closed to the public during the school closure
  • All facility rentals are cancelled or postponed until schools reopen

During this closure, we ask that if you or a member of your family are asked to self-quarantine, or if you or any member of your family tests positive for COVID-19, please contact the Porter County Health Department.

Closing school is never an easy decision. It is, however, a recommended strategy to protect the health and safety of our entire community from COVID-19, particularly the more vulnerable members of our community. This decision has been established to prevent the spread of the virus by social distancing. For this reason, we strongly recommend students and staff refrain from large gatherings or congested public settings during the closure.

As always, Porter County schools strongly encourages all students, families and staff to continue practicing good health hygiene to prevent the spread of any illness, including viruses.

As the COVID-19 pandemic evolves, we will continue to keep our constituents updated via email and school websites.  Please watch for further communication from your school corporation.

Dear VCS Parents/Guardians and Community,

Valparaiso Community Schools is committed to the health and safety of our students and staff. We understand that information about COVID-19 has been developing rapidly and from multiple sources. In some instances, all of the facts may not be present which may cause panic or concern.

Although there are no confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Porter County at this time, VCS will continue preparing for any precautionary directives issued by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), the Indiana State Department of Health, the Porter County Health Department, and the Indiana Department of Education.

To that effect, an announcement was made to students at both middle schools and the high school to begin the practice of bringing their Chromebooks, chargers, and essential classroom materials home beginning tonight in the event that outside agencies call for the immediate closure of schools. This announcement was made out of an abundance of caution. In the event of a school closure, elementary parents will receive information regarding school issued devices for students who are in need of one.

As the scope of this situation changes frequently, Valparaiso Community Schools has been taking proactive measures to maintain a safe learning environment for our school community. Our custodial staff is conducting deeper cleanings and disinfecting frequently touched areas in our usual cleaning regimen.

Below are the CDC recommended precautionary measures to know and share with your child:

  • Wash your hands frequently using soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water are not available, use a hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol.
  • Avoid touching your face, particularly your eyes, nose, and mouth.
  • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the garbage.
  • Avoid close contact with individuals who are sick.
  • Stay home if you are sick.

We will continue to communicate with you as we receive updates from the CDC, the Indiana State Department of Health, the Porter County Health Department, and the Indiana Department of Education that impact our schools and community.

Preventing the Spread of Flu

As you are probably aware, Flu season has officially started in Indiana, with emergency departments and outpatient provider clinics reporting influenza-like illness in their patients.   There are many strains of influenza that are currently present during this time of year.

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is closely monitoring developments around an outbreak of a respiratory illness caused by a novel (new) coronavirus. While the CDC considers this a very serious public health threat, based on current information, the immediate health risk to the general American public and Porter County is considered low at this time.  We will continue to work closely with the Indiana State Department of Health and the Indiana Department of Education will share information with the school community if the risk level increases.

In an effort to prevent the spread of any illness or flu, please remember to:

  • Wash hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer;
  • Avoid touching eyes, nose, or mouth;
  • Avoid close contact with those who are already sick;
  • Get plenty of sleep;
  • Eat healthy food and drink plenty of fluids;
  • Cover your nose and mouth when coughing or sneezing with a tissue or into the crook of your arm. Then throw the tissue in the trash;
  • Clean commonly touched surfaces; and
  • Stay home if ill for at least 24 hours after the fever is gone. (fever free without any fever reducing medications)

Contact the school if your child will not be in attendance.  Please inform them of symptoms or diagnosis of your child. This way we can track attendance related to illness within buildings.

Thanks for all you do to help keep your child healthy and ready to learn.

Feel free to contact your building Nurse or Joy Sunday BSN, RN Director of Health Services. 219/531/1447 or [email protected]
