MISSION STATEMENT

Memorial's Mission Statement is a result of a self-study by Memorial's staff and parents in 1990, 1995, 2000, and 2002. We have worked at using all available resources in an efficient and effective manner. We are constantly changing the way we do things for the children that we serve. We believe that we should review the educational research for ways of improving our instructional delivery. The Memorial staff has worked to become accredited by the North Central Association.  We continue to work with the NCA for our school improvement program.

SCHOOL HISTORY

Memorial Elementary School was originally constructed in 1957 and opened in 1958 for grades K-6. When the Valparaiso Community Schools adopted the middle school concept in 1986, Memorial Elementary School became a K-5 school.

It was a small neighborhood school until August 1990 when an addition and remodeling project doubled the physical size of the school. The renovation provided the school with more space and an improved office area as well as a media center. A new roof was added to the original section of the building in the summer of 1993. The original section of the building was retrofitted with new windows and the entire building was air conditioned in 1995. The school was also wired for instructional technology. Computers are located in every classroom along with Internet capabilities.

PARENT INVOLVEMENT

Memorial Elementary School’s Parent Teacher Organization is very active with programs such as Family Night, Friday Night Live, Saturday Workday, TV Turn-Off, student awards, and the Discovery Fair. The goal of the Parent Teacher Organization is to promote activities that enable parents to become involved with their children and the school.

The Memorial Elementary School parents are a valuable asset to the school, many of whom volunteer to assist teachers with projects and activities in the classroom.
