VIC Antiracism Essay Contest

The Valparaiso International Center (The VIC) recently announced the results of an essay contest for Porter County high school and middle school students based on their reading of the book, Stamped: Racism, Antiracism and You by Jason Reynolds and Ibram X. Kendi.

Students were required to read the book and submit a 750–1000-word essay. Participants were asked to reflect on how the book impacted them personally and address the following questions:

  • How has your perception of racism in America changed?
  • What can you do to help bring about positive change?

The essays written by Shelby Prybell, a tenth-grade student at Valparaiso High School, and Lucas Peterson, a sixth-grade student at Thomas Jefferson Middle School, were selected to receive $250 awards.

Several students shared their essays with Middle School Media Specialist Ms. Hurley, and she created a slideshow to highlight their impressive insights. Click here to view the slideshow.
