Middle School Program Changes 2020-2021

 
 
Summary of Schedule Changes
  1. Addition of Digital Applications and Responsibility in 7th Grade
    • ALL students may earn 1 high school credit (creates flexibility in future schedule for other course options)
    • Word processing, spreadsheets, and presentations
    • Digital communication and organizational skills
    • File sharing and file management
    • Social media responsibility
    • Conducting internet research
    • Problem-solving
    • Computer science
    • Coding

  2. Exploring World Language in 7th Grade
    • Introduction to four languages offered in high school
    • Exposure to other languages and cultures beyond those at the high school
    • Promotion of diversity and broader worldview
    • Opportunities for deeper thinking (reading, writing, and discussion)
  3. OR  Spanish I in 7th Grade
    • This year-long option would be taken in place of Exploring World Language & Digital Applications 
    • Open to all students (not an advanced course)
    • All students may earn 2 high school credits
    • Leads to Spanish II in 8th-grade
    • Meant for students who have long-term plans of taking 6 years of Spanish for international mindedness and career pathways

  4. Changes to Allied Arts in 7th and 8th Grade
    • Change from 7.5-Week to 9-Week Rotations (increase in days for deeper exploration of topics; 17% increase in time)
    • Addition of Core+ for students needing targeted support in E/LA and Math (smaller class sizes and individualized instruction)
    • All students required to take some health and P.E.
  5. 8th Grade World Language
    • Opportunity for ALL students to take the first year of a world language (currently only 70% of students have this opportunity)
    • Identical instructional minutes (50 min.) as high school world language course
    • Demonstration of proficiency will lead to year two of world language for freshman year
    • ALL students may earn 2 credits for high school (creates flexibility in future schedule for other course options)
