Choir

WHY:  Recently in music class your child learned about some of the choral opportunities available to middle school students in Valparaiso.  We want to make sure that as a parent, you too receive this information.  Valparaiso is fortunate to have one of the top high school choirs in the state of Indiana and a choral program that offers many opportunities to our young musicians.  Our middle school choir students will learn to read music and have opportunities to perform as soloists and in groups.  Our high school students have the opportunity to travel, and a number of our highly-trained vocal students even earn college scholarships.  Studies consistently tell us that students who participate in performing groups have improved standardized test scores and increased academic success, so we know you will want to encourage your children to take advantage of these opportunities.

WHEN: Choir in middle school is a class that meets every day during one of the allied arts periods.  It does not conflict with a student’s ability to participate in sports or other after-school activities.  Students do receive a grade in choir, and it does require 3-4 concerts outside of the school day.  Students have one week at the beginning of the school year to add or drop choir from their schedule.  Unfortunately, students who are in band or orchestra may not also be in choir, as the classes meet at the same time.

The students still have one week at the beginning of the school year to add or drop choir from their schedule.

CHOIR CAMP: We are excited to offer as an optional summer musical experience our Middle School Choir Camp!  This camp is for incoming 6th graders through outgoing 8th graders and is a great way for students to be introduced to middle school choir and to begin to meet other students who will be joining them in their choir classes. Camp is an intensive day camp that will be held from June 3rd through June 7th from 1:00-4:30 each afternoon at VHS. We stress that camp is optional, but it is a fun and challenging way to enjoy singing together as a choir over the summer.  Students who are not participating in choir in middle school but love to sing are also invited to attend. You should receive registration materials through your elementary music teachers.  You can also contact the middle school choir directors with any questions.

Please contact us with any questions you might have. We look forward to meeting and working with your children!
