About Dr. Brian Smith
Dr. Brian Smith brings more than 30 years of experience in public education, including 17 years as a superintendent. He most recently served as Superintendent of the School Town of Highland for 13 years after serving as Superintendent of North Newton School Corporation. Earlier in his career, he served as both a teacher and principal in Fort Wayne Community Schools.
Throughout his career, Dr. Smith has demonstrated a commitment to academic excellence, responsible financial stewardship, strategic planning, and collaborative leadership. He has led major capital improvement projects, expanded opportunities for students, maintained strong financial stability, and built high-performing leadership teams.

- Education Specialist (Superintendent License) – Ball State University
- Doctorate in Educational Leadership – Indiana Wesleyan University
Leadership Beyond the District
Dr. Smith currently serves his fourth term as President of the Northwest Indiana Public School Study Council, a regional consortium where school districts collaborate to address shared educational issues, conduct research, share best practices, and advocate for strong public schools. For the past eight years, he has also served as the Indiana Association of Public School Superintendents Region 1 Legislative Representative. He previously served as President of the Northwest Indiana Superintendents Association.

Family
Dr. Smith and his wife, Sallie, have been married for 32 years. Sallie has served as an elementary school teacher for more than 30 years. Their two daughters live in Chicago and Indianapolis, and they look forward to making Valparaiso their home and becoming active members of the community.
