Nurses

School nursing, a specialized practice of nursing, protects and promotes student health, facilitates optimal development, and advances academic success. School nurses, grounded in ethical and evidence-based practice, are the leaders who bridge health care and education, provide care coordination, advocate for quality student-centered care, and collaborate to design systems that allow individuals and communities to develop their full potential.

School nurses perform screenings for vision, hearing, growth and development, dental needs, health problems, and behavioral concerns. In an effort to control communicable diseases, the nursing staff enforces immunization laws, disseminates appropriate exposure notices, and provides health education within the school district. For students with chronic health conditions or special needs, the nurses develop and monitor school health care plans in collaboration with other school professionals, parents, and community health care professionals or agencies. The nursing staff works with the family and the school as a whole to make school an optimal learning environment to fit each child’s unique health and emotional needs.
